Letter of Explanation

Parents and Students,

It’s that time of year again when everyone begins getting the sniffles, coughing, and sore throats. Hopefully, we will all stay healthy and not catch any of these infectious diseases. However, as we begin our new unit of study on the immune system and diseases, our goal will be to learn about infectious and noninfectious diseases and the body’s defenses against diseases.

During this unit students will be completing a research project which they will present to the class.  They will work with a partner and research a disease of their choice. The project is due on December 18th and students will present their findings to their science class on December 18th and 19th.

On Thursday, December 5th students will begin their research. Candace Walton, our media specialist, will help the students generate research questions and guide them to reliable websites.  Upon completion of their research students will be expected to share their information with their science class.

The students will be presented with the following scenario:  the World Health Organization would like to allocate funding to a team of scientists to conduct extensive research on a particular disease. Each team of scientists will choose how to present their research findings. Students will be asked to present their research in their own creative way. Some examples of creativity that we will hope to see are for students to demonstrate their disease through role playing, creating a power point or flip chart presentation with special video clips, or presenting models of infected and non-infected body parts. Students can also campaign for their disease by creating Public Service Announcements, banners, or even bumper stickers. Scientists should also provide three key facts about their disease that explains why the money should be allocated to their team. As each team of scientists presents their research, other scientists viewing the presentation will record the 3 key facts and other information that they find valuable. At the end of the presentations, as a class we will vote on the disease that should be awarded the funding.

This is a news alert from the World Health Organization. We are calling all Panther scientists for immediate help with solving a major problem. Our database has just been wiped out and we can't recall the records of all the infectious and noninfectious diseases. Our research is L.O.S.T., LOST! We need your help with recovering all of this information. We have sick patients and no one can recall what diseases are caused by which symptoms. The World Health Organization is even providing money to a team of scientists that researches and presents their findings. We need for you to be creative when presenting your findings. Remember, your help is imperative. To all other viewers, we will be giving you updates as scientists present their findings.
