Full Tilt Research Project - Bradley/McDougal/Ritchie

Full Tilt Research Project

In the novel Full Tilt, Blake has fears that he must face in order to escape the evil amusement park created by Cassandra. What kind of fears do you have? What kind of fears do you think middle school children have to face? We will be researching common fears (known as phobias) and treatments for this project. Then in a four-paragraph essay you will explain the fear (phobia), the symptoms and how it can be treated. This will count for a major grade and is due Friday, Jan. 31st.

Step 1: Research

You will conduct a short research project to answer a question drawing on several sources. (Standard W 7.7)

You will gather relevant information from multiple sources, using search terms effectively; and paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism. You are required to use MLA format to cite your sources. You must have at least two sources and a works cited page. (Standard W 7.8)

Day 1: You will view the following website slideshow to choose a fear to research:

By the end of Day 1, you will have researched a specific phobia and have enough evidence to write a paragraph describing the phobia and symptoms.

Day 2: Use the following websites to research treatments for the phobia:

By the end of Day 2, you will have enough evidence to write a paragraph describing the treatments for the phobia.

Step 2: The Essay

1. You will develop a flowchart that will help you to produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience. (Standard W 7.4)

2. You will write an informative/explanatory essay that examines the phobias and symptoms and conveys the information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content, your research (Standard W 7.2). Your essay should have an introduction, two body paragraphs, a conclusion, and a works cited page and must follow the Schaffer model of writing and the conventions of Standard American English.
